What a folio holds
When you invest in a fund house for the first time, the AMC (through its registrar, CAMS or KFintech) opens a folio in your name. It records your name, PAN, bank account, nominee, contact details, mode of holding, and every purchase and redemption. All schemes you hold with that fund house can sit under the same folio, unless the holding pattern differs (for example, single and joint).
Folio vs demat account
A folio is held with the AMC and shows your units in a statement of account. A demat account holds securities electronically with a depository. Mutual fund units can be held either way; for regular SIPs most investors simply use folios and never need a demat account.
Why the folio matters
- Every transaction needs it. Redemptions, switches, SIP changes and nominee updates are done against a folio.
- It carries your KYC and bank details. If your mobile number, email or bank account is out of date, withdrawals and statements can fail.
- Joint holding rules. A folio can be single, joint or "anyone or survivor". The mode decides who can sign and who receives the money if a holder passes away.
- Nomination. Add a nominee. Without one, claims by legal heirs take far more paperwork.
How to find your folio number
- Account statement or the confirmation email after your first purchase.
- Consolidated account statement (CAS) from the registrars or MF Central, which lists all folios under your PAN.
- The AMC's website or app after logging in.
One folio or many?
Having several folios with one AMC is possible (for example if you invested through different distributors or modes of holding) but creates clutter. Keeping one folio per AMC and per holding pattern is easier to track and easier for your family to claim. You can merge folios in some cases by asking the AMC.
