What an ARN is
Anyone who sells or distributes mutual fund units in India must be registered with AMFI and hold an ARN. To get one, an individual must pass the NISM Series V-A: Mutual Fund Distributors certification examination and then apply to AMFI. The code appears on your application form, account statement and online order, so the fund house knows which distributor your investment came through and to whom to pay the trail commission.
Validity and renewal
An ARN is valid for three years, in step with the three-year validity of the NISM Series V-A certificate. The holder must apply for renewal on or up to six months before expiry. If the renewal is filed before expiry and found in order, the validity continues without a gap; if it is filed after expiry, the renewed validity starts from the filing date. This means an active ARN is a sign of a current certificate, but an expired one tells you to ask questions.
ARN vs EUIN
| ARN | EUIN | |
|---|---|---|
| Stands for | AMFI Registration Number | Employee Unique Identification Number |
| Belongs to | The distributor (individual or firm) | The specific person who dealt with you |
| Why it exists | Identifies the distributor who earns commission | Identifies the individual behind the advice, to reduce mis-selling |
| Where it appears | Application form and statement | Application form |
If an employee or relationship manager of a distributor deals with you, their EUIN should be on your form even though the ARN belongs to the firm.
How to verify an ARN
- Ask your distributor for the ARN and the ARN card.
- Check the ARN on AMFI's website using the distributor search.
- Confirm the name and the validity date match.
- Look at your own statement: the ARN printed there should be the one you were given.
GTP Fintech Solutions is registered as ARN-368973. See the step-by-step guide: How to check a distributor's registration.
What an ARN does not tell you
An ARN shows registration, not skill or fit. It does not mean the person is an SEBI-registered investment adviser (those hold a separate SEBI registration, with numbers beginning INA). It is not a guarantee about any fund. Also, investing with no distributor at all uses a direct plan, which shows "DIRECT" instead of an ARN and carries a lower expense ratio. See direct vs regular.
How to get an ARN
Pass the NISM Series V-A exam, complete KYC and the distributor application with AMFI, pay the registration fee, and keep the ARN renewed every three years. The current fee and process are on AMFI's website.
ARN, RIA, POSP and insurance agent: who is who
People often assume every "advisor" holds the same registration. They do not. Each registration sits with a different body and allows different work.
| Registration | Issued by | What it allows |
|---|---|---|
| ARN (with EUIN for individuals) | AMFI | Distributing mutual fund schemes and earning commission from the fund house |
| Investment Adviser (RIA), number starts with INA | SEBI | Giving paid investment advice, usually on a fee basis, with no product commission on the same client |
| Insurance agent or POSP licence | IRDAI | Selling insurance policies from the insurers the agent is tied to |
A single person can hold more than one. The check for each is separate: AMFI's register for the ARN, SEBI's register for an INA number and the insurer or IRDAI for an insurance licence.
Red flags when someone says "I have an ARN"
- They cannot show the ARN card, or the name on it does not match the person or firm you are dealing with.
- The validity date on the card has passed.
- They ask you to send money to a personal bank account. Mutual fund money should go to the fund house or the scheme's collection account, never to the distributor personally.
- They promise a fixed or guaranteed return from a market-linked fund.
- They push you to switch funds often without a clear reason. Each switch can trigger exit load and tax, and more activity can mean more commission.
- They discourage you from reading the scheme documents or checking the ARN yourself.
