How to start a SIP in India: a beginner's guide

A SIP is simply an instruction to put a fixed amount into a mutual fund on the same date every month. You do not need a large lump sum, and you do not need to time the market. This guide walks through the practical steps, from deciding an amount to completing KYC and reviewing once a year.

What a SIP actually is

SIP stands for Systematic Investment Plan. You choose a mutual fund scheme, an amount, and a date. Every month that amount leaves your bank account and buys units of the fund at that day’s NAV (net asset value).

The point is habit and averaging, not a special product. The fund you buy through a SIP is the same fund you could buy as a one-time lumpsum. The SIP is only the schedule.

Decide the monthly amount before you pick a fund

Start with an amount you can continue when a month is tight. Many salaried beginners begin between ₹1,000 and ₹5,000 a month, then raise it when income grows. A step-up SIP does that raise automatically each year.

Protection comes first: if you have dependants and no term cover, fix that before stretching the SIP. Investing without a safety net is how plans break when income stops.

  • Keep 3-6 months of expenses in an emergency buffer outside equity funds.
  • Pick a SIP date a few days after salary credit so instalments do not bounce.
  • Write down the goal (retirement, child’s education, a house) and a rough year you need the money.

Complete KYC once, then invest for life

Indian mutual funds need KYC (Know Your Customer): PAN, proof of address, a photo, and a bank account in your name. Most people finish this digitally through their distributor or an AMC app in a single sitting.

After KYC is done, you can open folios across fund houses without repeating the paperwork. Units sit in your name with the AMC. Working with a distributor does not lock your money in.

How to choose the first fund without overthinking

For a long goal (10+ years), a diversified equity or hybrid fund from a well-known AMC is usually enough to start. Check expense ratio, exit load, and how long the fund (and fund house) has been around. Past returns are history, not a promise.

Avoid chasing the top performer of the last one year. Prefer a short list you understand over a crowded portfolio you cannot review.

Set it up, then leave it alone (with one yearly check)

Once the SIP is live, the hard part is not tinkering. Markets will rise and fall. The SIP keeps buying through both. Review once a year: is the amount still right for your salary, is the goal still the same, and is the fund still fit for purpose?

If you want the instalment to rise with your income, use a step-up SIP from day one rather than relying on memory every April.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum SIP amount in India?
Most equity funds allow SIPs from ₹500 or ₹1,000 a month. Check the scheme information document for the exact minimum. Starting small and staying consistent beats waiting until you can invest a large sum.
Do I need a demat account for a mutual fund SIP?
No. Mutual fund units can be held in a folio with the AMC (or through an RTA) without a demat account. Some platforms offer demat holding as an option, but it is not required to start a SIP.
Can I stop or change a SIP later?
Yes. You can pause, stop, or change the amount through your distributor or the AMC. Stopping the SIP does not force you to redeem existing units. Those stay invested until you sell.
Should beginners start with ELSS for tax saving?
Only if you still have Section 80C room and can accept a three-year lock-in on each instalment. Otherwise a flexible equity or hybrid SIP for your real goal is usually clearer. See our ELSS guide if tax season is driving the decision.
