Mutual fund portfolio review: allocation, overlap and action list
We look at what you hold and tell you plainly whether it is working: asset allocation, fund overlap, risk, costs and the funds worth keeping.
For investors with SIPs and policies picked up over the years and no clear picture of how they fit together.
Most portfolios are not built, they accumulate. A few SIPs a bank relationship manager suggested, an old ELSS fund from a tax season, a unit-linked policy that is doing the job of neither insurance nor investment, and a demat account with three stocks someone recommended.
A review puts the whole thing on one page. We look at how your money is actually split across equity, debt, gold and cash, where funds overlap and quietly hold the same stocks, which schemes have lagged their category for years, and what the portfolio is costing you in expense ratios and exit loads.
You get a short written summary: what to keep, what to stop, what to switch, what to consolidate, and a simple target allocation for your goals and age. If a policy should be surrendered or made paid-up, we say so and explain the maths. There is no obligation to invest anything further through us.
A review is worth doing when you have been investing for a few years without a plan, when you have changed jobs or had a child, or when you simply cannot say what your money is for. Once a year after that is enough for most people.

- Underperformer identification
- Schemes that have trailed their category benchmark for three years or more, separated from short-term noise.
- Cost and expense-ratio audit
- The total drag from fund expense ratios and exit loads across what you already hold.
- Insurance-cum-investment review
- ULIPs, endowment and money-back policies assessed on their real return and whether to continue, reduce or surrender.

- A shortlist to move to, folios to merge, and a switch sequence that manages the tax impact.
- Periodic monitoring
- An annual re-check, and a review whenever your income, goals or family situation changes materially.
What a review actually covers
- 01
Your current split across equity, debt, gold and cash, set against a target allocation for each goal and your years to it.
- 02
Holdings overlap: funds with different names and similar portfolios, and any single stock or sector carrying too much of the risk.
- 03
Funds that have trailed their own category benchmark for three years or more, told apart from a bad quarter.
- 04
Total cost: expense ratios and exit loads that quietly drag on what you already hold.
- 05
A one-page action list: keep, stop, switch, consolidate, with the order to do it in and the tax it triggers.
What an un-reviewed portfolio quietly costs you
A portfolio that has drifted still grows. It just grows slower, with more risk than you signed up for, and towards no particular goal.
Allocation drift changes your risk
After a long equity run, a portfolio meant to be 60% equity can be 75% without you doing anything. The next correction then hurts more than you expected, often right before a goal.
Overlap is fake diversification
Six large-cap funds can hold nearly the same fifty stocks. You carry the cost and complexity of six funds with the diversification of one.
Chronic underperformers add up
A fund that lags its category by 2% a year for a decade is a large sum of money you never see, hidden because the absolute number still looks positive.
Old insurance-linked plans drag
Endowment and ULIP plans bought years ago often return 4 to 6%. Knowing the real number lets you decide clearly instead of holding on out of sunk cost.
Who should get a review
You have been investing for 3+ years with no plan
SIPs and policies added over time, never checked against each other or a goal.
You got advice from a bank or an app
You want an independent second opinion on what you were sold, with no product to push back.
Your life has changed
A new job, marriage, a child or a house means the portfolio you built earlier may no longer fit.
You are consolidating after years
Multiple folios, demat accounts and platforms that you want simplified into something you can actually manage.

Questions people ask about portfolio review & guidance
- Do I have to move my investments to you after a review?
- No. The review stands on its own and you keep the written summary. If you decide to act on it through us, existing regular-plan holdings can be transferred; direct-plan holdings stay where they are.
- What do you need from me for a review?
- A consolidated account statement (CAS) from CAMS or KFintech covering all your mutual funds, and your latest insurance policy documents. That is enough to map the whole portfolio.
- How is this different from what my bank RM does?
- A bank relationship manager reviews you against products the bank sells. We are independent, hold no proprietary funds, and the review can conclude that the best move is to change nothing.
- Will you tell me to surrender my LIC or ULIP policy?
- Only if the maths says so, and we will show you the maths: the real return, the surrender value, and what the same premium could do elsewhere. Sometimes the right answer is to make it paid-up rather than surrender.
- How often should a portfolio be reviewed?
- Once a year is enough for most people, plus a check whenever your income, goals or family situation changes materially. More often than that usually leads to over-trading.
- How do commercial terms work for a portfolio review?
- The first discovery conversation is to understand your goals and holdings. Scope and engagement details for a detailed written review are discussed personally before any review work begins.
- Can you review direct stocks and PMS as well?
- We review the whole picture. Direct equity and any PMS or AIF holdings are assessed for concentration and fit alongside the mutual fund core, though we do not manage direct stock portfolios.
