How an NFO works

A fund house launches a scheme and keeps it open for subscription for a limited window, typically a couple of weeks. Units are allotted at the offer price, usually ₹10 each. After the NFO closes, an open-ended scheme reopens for ongoing purchases and redemptions at the daily NAV, with no entry load.

The myth of the cheap NFO

A ₹10 unit looks cheaper than an existing fund's ₹150 NAV. It is not. NAV is a per-unit value, not a measure of price or value. A ₹10 NFO and a ₹150 fund that invest in the same shares give the same percentage return. You get more units in the NFO; you do not get more money.

Why an NFO is not automatically better

  • No track record. You cannot see how the manager handled a fall.
  • The portfolio does not exist yet. The fund has to buy its holdings after your money arrives.
  • Many NFOs copy existing funds. SEBI's category rules let a fund house offer one scheme per category (with specified exceptions), so a new scheme often replaces or complements an old one with a similar mandate. Check whether an existing fund already does the same job with a record you can see.
  • Theme and timing. A new thematic fund tends to launch after the theme has already run up.
  • The marketing is persuasive. Read the scheme information document, not the advertisement.

What to check before investing

  1. The category and what the fund must hold, from the SEBI category rules (for example, 65% minimum equity for a flexi cap).
  2. The benchmark, expense ratio and exit load.
  3. The fund manager's record on other schemes.
  4. How the fund differs from the fund house's existing offers.
  5. Whether the riskometer level fits you.

SEBI's 2026 changes

SEBI's February 2026 categorisation circular requires scheme names to match their category (the "true-to-label" principle) and caps the portfolio overlap between thematic or sectoral schemes and other equity schemes at 50%. This reduces, but does not remove, the problem of look-alike funds.
