SIP delay calculator: the cost of starting late

Every year you wait to start a SIP costs more than one year of returns, because the money you skip would also have compounded. This SIP delay calculator shows the corpus you lose by starting later and the catch-up SIP needed to close the gap.

Default result

Waiting 3 years to start means investing ₹3.60 L less, but ending up about ₹29.58 L poorer at your goal, because that money misses its most powerful compounding years. To still finish near ₹91.99 L, you would need about ₹14,740/month for the remaining 17 years.

To still finish near ₹91.99 L after a 3-year delay, you would need about ₹14,740/month for the remaining 17 years (catch-up SIP), versus ₹10,000/month if you start now.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the monthly SIP, years to the goal, how many years you delay, and expected return.
  2. Compare corpus if you start now versus later.
  3. Read the cost of delay and the catch-up SIP needed to finish at the same corpus.

Formula and worked example

Both scenarios use the standard SIP future-value formula and the same finish date. The delayed SIP simply runs for fewer months (total years minus the delay). The difference between the two maturity values is the cost of delay.

The exact formula

cost = FV(P, N, r) − FV(P, N − d, r)
  P = monthly amount   N = years to the goal   d = years you delay   r = return
Both use the level-SIP formula; the delayed plan simply runs d fewer years.

Worked example. ₹10,000/mo · 20-year goal · start 3 years late · 12% → you invest ₹3.60 L less but finish ₹29.58 L poorer (₹91.99 L vs ₹62.41 L).

Assumptions and limits

  • Level SIP (no step-up) in both scenarios; same finish date; return constant.
  • Both scenarios use the same finish date and level SIP amount.
  • Catch-up SIP solves for the higher instalment needed in the shorter remaining window.
  • Return is illustrative, not guaranteed.

Results are illustrations. Actual outcomes depend on markets, interest rates, taxes and charges, none of which are guaranteed.

Cost of delay calculator: what waiting costs

Waiting feels free until you compare two finish-line corpuses. Starting a ₹10,000 SIP now for 20 years at 12% reaches about ₹91.99 lakh; waiting three years and then investing for the remaining time lands near ₹62.41 lakh. The gap—about ₹29.58 lakh—is the cost of delay at your assumed rate. That is money you never see at the goal date, even though the monthly debit looks identical once you begin. Write the sip delay cost inputs you trust into your annual review note so next year’s rerun of “Cost of delay calculator: what waiting costs” starts from recorded figures.

Cost of delaying SIP

People delay SIPs for renovations, higher studies or simply indecision. This calculator prices that pause. On the defaults, a three-year wait costs roughly ₹29.58 lakh versus starting today, with the on-time path near ₹91.99 lakh. If the delay is unavoidable, use the catch-up SIP figure to see how much harder the remaining years become. Catch-up only works if cash flow can bear the higher debit; otherwise extend the goal date honestly. When household opinions differ on risk for sip delay cost under “Cost of delaying SIP”, fund the more conservative case first and treat any extra debit as optional top-ups.

What if I start SIP late

Starting late is common in the late twenties or after a career break. The maths still works—you just need more time or a larger instalment. Compare the delayed corpus ₹62.41 lakh with the on-time ₹91.99 lakh under the sample inputs. A late start plus a step-up can close part of the gap without an extreme first debit. Do not “make up” delay by assuming a fantasy return above what your risk tolerance allows. If the sip delay cost instalment for “What if I start SIP late” looks unaffordable, cut the target or add years before you inflate the assumed return unrealistically.

Delay in SIP cost calculator

Searchers looking for delay-in-SIP cost want a rupee gap, not a lecture. Here it is: with ₹10,000 monthly, 20-year horizon, three-year delay and 12% assumed return, the shortfall is about ₹29.58 lakh. Share that single number with a partner when debating whether to wait another year. Then decide among start small now, catch-up later, or move the goal—three concrete choices instead of open-ended delay. After you accept the “Delay in SIP cost calculator” maths, update nominees and the bank mandate—process gaps undo an otherwise sound sip delay cost plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does delay assume I invest nothing during the wait?

Yes. The delayed scenario starts the SIP after the wait and stops at the same finish year as the on-time case.

What is catch-up SIP?

The higher monthly amount needed after the delay so you still approach the on-time corpus in the years left.

Can I delay but invest a lumpsum later?

Model the lumpsum on the lumpsum calculator and compare with starting a smaller SIP now; this page focuses on level SIP delay.

Is the cost of delay guaranteed?

No. It is the difference between two illustrations at the return you enter.

Should I wait for a market crash before starting?

Timing crashes is unreliable. A modest SIP now usually beats an open-ended wait for a perfect entry.

How many delay years can I model?

Use the delay control within its allowed range; extreme waits leave too little compounding time to catch up.

Does this include step-up SIPs?

The delay comparison uses a level SIP. For rising instalments, approximate by comparing step-up runs with different start years.

Can an advisor reuse these inputs?

Yes. Share the inputs and the result screenshot with an AMFI-registered distributor so they can map the maths to products without changing the formula.
