AUM: all investors' money, put to workyour share
Illustration. AUM is the total money a fund or fund house manages for all its investors together.

What counts in AUM

For a mutual fund scheme, AUM is the current market value of everything it holds, including cash. It moves for two reasons: new money coming in or going out (flows), and the market value of the holdings rising or falling. A scheme's AUM can grow even if no one invests a rupee, simply because its stocks rise.

The size of the Indian industry

According to the AMFI Monthly Note for August 2026, the mutual fund industry's AUM rose 1.5% in the month to ₹87.08 lakh crore. Within it:

SegmentAUM (Aug 2026)
Debt-oriented schemes₹19.33 lakh crore
Hybrid funds₹11.86 lakh crore
Passive funds₹15.42 lakh crore
Assets held through SIPs₹18.62 lakh crore (21.4% of industry)

Equity funds recorded a net inflow of ₹29,329 crore for the 66th consecutive month.

Why AUM matters to you

  1. Cost. Under SEBI's expense rules, the permitted base expense ratio falls in steps as a scheme's daily net assets grow. A larger scheme can charge a smaller percentage. See expense ratio.
  2. Capacity. A very large small-cap or mid-cap fund can struggle to buy and sell without moving prices. A very small fund can have higher costs and a risk of closure or merger.
  3. Stability. Size alone does not prove quality. A small fund with a consistent process can be better than a bloated one.

Common mistakes

  • Treating high AUM as proof that a fund is good. Popularity follows past returns; it does not predict future ones.
  • Comparing AUM across categories. A liquid fund will naturally be larger than a sectoral fund.
  • Using the word loosely about a distributor. "AUM" for a distributor is the value of client assets under its distribution; it is not assets the distributor owns or manages. Treat unverified claims with care.

How AUM changes: an example

A scheme starts the month with ₹1,000 crore. Investors put in ₹100 crore net of withdrawals and the portfolio gains 5% on the whole. The month ends at about (₹1,000 crore + ₹100 crore) × 1.05 = ₹1,155 crore. Roughly half of the rise came from new money and half from market gains. A scheme whose AUM falls can be seeing outflows, falling markets or both, and the two tell you different things.

Month-end AUM vs average AUM

AMFI publishes both. Month-end AUM is the value on the last day. Average AUM is the average of daily values through the period and is used for comparing months because it smooths out one-day jumps. When you see an AUM figure quoted, check which one it is.
