How India measures and targets it
India's headline measure is the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The Reserve Bank of India works under a flexible inflation-targeting framework with a 4% target and a tolerance band of 2 percentage points on either side (2% to 6%). The framework was reviewed in 2026 and renewed for five years. Actual inflation varies from month to month; you can see the latest figure on the RBI and statistics-ministry websites.
What 6% inflation does to your money
Assume 6% inflation a year. Purchasing power halves in about 12 years.
| What | Today | After 10 years | After 20 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchasing power of ₹1 lakh | ₹1,00,000 | ₹55,839 | ₹31,180 |
| Monthly household expense | ₹50,000 | ₹89,542 | ₹1,60,357 |
At 7% inflation, a ₹50,000 monthly expense becomes about ₹1.93 lakh in 20 years. These are the numbers behind every retirement and education plan. Use the inflation calculator.
Real return: what your investment actually earns
An investment's real return is its growth after inflation. The exact formula is (1 + nominal return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1.
| Investment return | Inflation | Real return |
|---|---|---|
| 12% (an assumed equity return) | 6% | About 5.7% |
| 7% (a typical FD rate) | 6% | About 0.9% before tax |
An FD that pays 7% when prices rise 6% barely keeps your money's value, and after tax on the interest it can lose ground. That is why long goals usually need some equity, and why a flat SIP and a flat withdrawal both fall behind. See step-up SIP and SWP.
Personal inflation is not the headline number
The CPI is an average. Education and healthcare costs have often risen faster than general inflation, so planning calculators let you set a higher rate for those goals. Your own rate depends on what you spend on.
How to use inflation in your plan
- Express every future goal in future rupees: today's cost × (1 + inflation)^years.
- Use an inflation-adjusted return when judging a fund or FD.
- Raise your SIP and your retirement withdrawals with inflation, not once and forever.
- Revisit the assumption every few years.
