How to use this calculator
- Enter today’s course cost and years until admission.
- Set education inflation, expected return and SIP step-up.
- Read future cost and the SIP or lumpsum needed to fund it.
Formula and worked example
Future cost = today’s cost × (1 + education inflation)^years. The required SIP is then the amount whose step-up future value equals that cost, and the lumpsum is its present value at the expected return.
The exact formula
Future cost: C = current cost × (1 + education inflation)^Y Monthly SIP: C ÷ FV(a ₹1 step-up SIP over Y years at the expected return) Lumpsum: C ÷ (1 + r)^Y
Worked example. ₹20 L course today · 12 years away · 10% education inflation · 12% return · 10% step-up → future cost ₹62.77 L, SIP ₹12,980/mo, or ₹16.11 L as a lumpsum today.

Assumptions and limits
- Education inflation (default 10%) is used, not headline inflation — tuition has consistently risen faster.
- Return constant; the SIP steps up each year.
- Education inflation default is higher than headline CPI.
- Return and step-up are held constant for the projection.
- Does not model scholarships, education loans or forex for overseas seats.

Children education calculator
College costs rise faster than general inflation in many Indian cities. A ₹20 lakh course today becomes about ₹62.77 lakh in 12 years at 10% education inflation. Funding that with a stepped SIP needs roughly ₹12,980 per month at a 12% return assumption in the defaults. Start from today’s fee brochure, not a round guess, then inflate. Overseas plans need an FX buffer on top. Write the child education inputs you trust into your annual review note so next year’s rerun of “Children education calculator” starts from recorded figures.
Education planning calculator
Education planning ties a dated admission year to a monthly funding habit. Enter today’s cost, years until admission, education inflation and expected return. The sample future cost is about ₹62.77 lakh with a SIP near ₹12,980. Keep education money in a dedicated folio so a market dip does not coincide with raiding the account for something else. Glide toward safer funds in the last three years before fees are due. When household opinions differ on risk for child education under “Education planning calculator”, fund the more conservative case first and treat any extra debit as optional top-ups.
Child education SIP
A child education SIP is simply a goal SIP with a higher inflation input. On the defaults, the required instalment is about ₹12,980 with a 10% step-up option enabled. If that debit hurts, extend the runway by starting earlier rather than assuming 15% returns. Review every board-exam year when stream choices change cost estimates. If the child education instalment for “Child education SIP” looks unaffordable, cut the target or add years before you inflate the assumed return unrealistically. After you accept the “Child education SIP” maths, update nominees and the bank mandate—process gaps undo an otherwise sound child education plan.
College cost calculator India
Indian college costs vary wildly across government seats, private universities and professional courses. Use the fee you would actually pay today as the starting cost. Inflating ₹20 lakh for 12 years at 10% yields about ₹62.77 lakh in this illustration. Professional courses with hostel and coaching loads may need a second goal line. Do not rely on “we will take a loan later” without modelling EMI capacity separately. After you accept the “College cost calculator India” maths, update nominees and the bank mandate—process gaps undo an otherwise sound child education plan.

Frequently asked questions
Why is education inflation higher than 6%?
Tuition and related costs have often outpaced CPI. Using 6% alone understates many college goals.
Should I include living expenses?
Yes if you will fund hostel, rent or travel. Add them into today’s cost before inflating.
What if we might go abroad?
Build an FX cushion and consider higher inflation. This rupee tool does not model currency moves.
Is the SIP guaranteed to hit the fee?
No. It is sized at your assumed return. Markets and fee hikes can still gap the plan.
Can education loans replace the SIP?
Loans shift cost to EMI later. Model both so you know the residual SIP needed.
When should I reduce equity exposure?
Typically in the final few years before admission so a crash does not hit right as fees are due.
Does this include scholarships?
No. Treat scholarships as upside; size the SIP assuming you pay the full fee.
Can an advisor reuse these inputs?
Yes. Share the inputs and the result screenshot with an AMFI-registered distributor so they can map the maths to products without changing the formula.
