Top-up in plain terms
You start a ₹5,000 monthly SIP with a top-up of ₹500 a year. In year two the instalment is ₹5,500, in year three ₹6,000, and so on. Nothing else about the SIP changes: same scheme, same date, same NAV rules.
Top-up or step-up: which one?
Both do the same job: stop a SIP from standing still while your income rises. The difference is the type of increase.
| Top-up (fixed amount) | Step-up (percentage) | |
|---|---|---|
| Rise each year | Same rupees every year (e.g. +₹500) | Same percentage (e.g. +10%) |
| Growth of instalment | Straight line | Compounding, speeds up |
| Good if | Your increments are modest and steady | Your pay grows by a percentage each year |
| Risk | Falls behind a fast-growing salary | Instalment can become large in later years |
A ₹5,000 SIP with a ₹500 yearly top-up reaches ₹14,500 in year 20. The same start with a 10% step-up reaches about ₹30,600. Test both with the step-up SIP calculator.
Practical tips
- Ask whether your platform labels the facility "top-up", "step-up", "increase" or "growth SIP". The names vary; the feature is the same idea.
- Keep the bank mandate limit above your expected later instalments.
- Set a yearly reminder to review the top-up when your pay changes.
Questions people ask
What does SIP top-up mean?
A planned increase in your SIP amount at fixed intervals.
Is a top-up SIP the same as a step-up SIP?
Close. Top-up is usually a fixed-rupee increase; step-up is a percentage. Platforms often use them interchangeably.
Can I top up a SIP that is already running?
Many platforms let you modify the SIP or add a new one. A new SIP is the simplest option if the facility is not shown.
Does a top-up change the tax treatment?
No. Each instalment is a separate purchase.
