Two things people call "equity SIP"
- SIP in an equity mutual fund. This is what the term almost always means. You buy units of an equity scheme monthly. A SEBI-defined equity fund holds at least 65% of its money in equity and equity-related instruments, and stricter categories hold 80% or more (for example large cap and ELSS).
- A monthly stock purchase. Some brokers offer a "stock SIP" that buys the same share or basket every month. That is a plan to buy shares directly, with no fund manager and no automatic diversification. It is a different product.
This page covers the first meaning.
What kind of equity fund
An equity SIP can go into any equity category: large cap, mid cap, small cap, flexi cap, index fund, ELSS and others. The label "equity SIP" does not tell you how risky it is. A large-cap index fund and a small-cap fund are both equity SIPs and behave very differently.
Risks to expect
- Volatility. Equity funds can fall 20 to 40% in a bad year or two. A SIP does not prevent that; it lets you buy during it.
- Time horizon. Equity money is best matched to goals that are at least five years away. For a goal in two years, a debt or hybrid fund is a safer home.
- Behaviour risk. The real loss for most investors comes from stopping the SIP at the bottom.
Tax on an equity SIP
Redemptions from equity-oriented funds are taxed as: 12.5% on long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year (units held more than 12 months) and 20% on short-term gains. Each instalment has its own holding period. See capital gains on mutual funds.
Equity SIP vs debt SIP vs hybrid SIP
| Where the money goes | Typical use | |
|---|---|---|
| Equity SIP | Mostly shares | Long goals: retirement, children's education |
| Debt SIP | Bonds, money-market | Short goals, stability |
| Hybrid SIP | Mix of both | Moderate risk, one-fund approach |
