What makes it "flexi"

Most equity categories fix how much must go into a size band. A flexi cap fund has no such limit: the manager can hold mostly large caps one year and add mid and small caps the next. The only hard rule is the 65% equity minimum. The rest of the portfolio can be debt, cash or, in some funds, overseas stocks within SEBI limits.

SEBI introduced the flexi cap category in November 2020, soon after tightening multi cap rules, so a manager who wanted freedom had a clearly labelled category. Under the February 2026 categorisation, both categories remain.

Strengths and limits

  • Strength: one fund gives broad equity exposure without you choosing the mix. The manager can respond to valuations.
  • Limit: you are trusting the manager's allocation. Two flexi cap funds can look very different: one mostly large cap, another with a big mid-cap share. Check what each actually holds.
  • Limit: because the mix drifts, comparing a flexi cap fund with a single benchmark (Nifty 500 TRI is common) is only approximate.

Who it suits

Investors who want a core equity fund for a long goal and prefer not to manage size bands themselves. If you want strict control over large, mid and small allocation, build it yourself with separate funds or choose multi cap.

Tax

A flexi cap fund is equity-oriented: 12.5% on long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year (more than 12 months) and 20% on short-term gains. See capital gains on mutual funds.
